Coming to believe in a Power greater than yourself is not a theological exercise. It is a personal creative act — one that each individual gets to shape in their own way, from a clean slate, without the residue of inherited ideas about what God is or is not. And it begins with a single practical question: where do you already feel something greater than yourself at work in your life?

Creating Your Own Image

What is being offered through spiritual principles is not a pre-packaged deity. It is the opportunity to build your own living concept of an ultimate loving Power — one that does not know hate, judgment, condemnation, testing, or punishment. A Power that knows only unconditional love, intelligence, and genuine creative power. The shaping tools are available. The work is yours to do, in your own way, at your own pace, on your own terms.

This matters because so many people carry residue from early ideas about God that were instilled by others — ideas of a punishing God, a testing God, a God with favorites. These ideas make genuine reliance impossible, because who would genuinely trust a Power that might be working against them? Starting fresh, with the intention of building a relationship with something that is unconditionally for you, changes the entire foundation.

Omnipresence: The First Connection

The first of the three qualities through which to approach this Power is omnipresence. Start by connecting the presence of this Power to the things that already make you feel good inside. Look at a beautiful sunset and ask: is the beauty in the sunset, or is it inside you? Point to it. You cannot. What you are responding to is something within you that recognizes beauty. The sunset is the mirror; the love and capacity for beauty are yours.

Think of a person you love deeply. Point to the part of them that represents everything you love about them. You cannot point to it — it is not located in their body. What you love about them is the reflection of something inside you. They are a mirror that shows you the love already living in you.

This is omnipresence: the quality of God that is everywhere, in every mirror, in every reflection of beauty, truth, love, rhythm, and balance that you encounter in any form. Your practice today is to seek more of those mirrors — not just in sunsets and the people you love, but in the ordinary details of the day. Wherever you find a reflection of love, you are touching omnipresence. And wherever you work with love, you are co-creating with a Power greater than yourself.

Key Takeaways

  • Coming to believe in a Power greater than yourself is a personal creative act — start with a clean slate, free of inherited ideas about God.
  • Build your concept of God around unconditional love, intelligence, and power — a God that does not test, punish, or condemn.
  • Omnipresence is the first quality: the beauty you feel in a sunset, the love you feel for someone — these are inside you, not in them.
  • Other people and nature are mirrors that reflect the love and beauty already living within you — seek more of those mirrors daily.
  • Wherever you work with love, you are co-creating with a Power greater than yourself — everything done with love is done masterfully.
