Being happy

Here is a question worth sitting with: if you cannot be happy where you are right now — with your life as it is today — what makes you think you will be happy when you get to where you want to go? Happiness is not a destination. It is a practice. And the only place to practice it is here, in the life you actually have.

Stop Waiting to Be Happy

Most of us are waiting. Waiting for the right relationship. The right job. The right amount of money. The right home. When I get that house, things will be okay. When I have those jet skis, life will be good. That is postponed fulfillment — and it is a trap. Because even when you get the thing, you find a new thing to get before you allow yourself to feel good.

The moment to be happy is now. Not tomorrow. Not after the next milestone. Right now. How much energy are you actually putting into being happy with your life as it currently exists? If you are honest with yourself, the answer is probably: not much. We dig far more energy into wanting what we do not have than into appreciating what we do.

A Simple Exercise in Gratitude

Try this. Imagine for a moment that the things you love most in your life were taken away. Your closest person. Your home. Your health. Really sit with what that would feel like. Now imagine getting it all back. That feeling — that rush of relief, gratitude, and love — is the feeling that is available to you right now, without anything changing.

You do not need to lose something to appreciate it. You only need to clearly imagine what life would be without it. Do that, and suddenly the life you have looks radically different. Suddenly you are a wealthy person. Not in a financial sense, but in the sense that matters: you have people to love, reasons to get up, things worth protecting.

Connect With Emotional Energy Now

Go through the list. The people you love. The simple pleasures of your life. The small things that are always there, waiting to be noticed. Let yourself feel connected to them — not just intellectually aware of them, but emotionally present with them. That emotional connection is the engine of happiness. Without it, life is just information. With it, life is alive.

If you are not feeling good right now, your mission is simple: find what is good, and stay there. Any thought that pulls you away from what is good — kick it out for a little while. You are not running from reality. You are choosing which part of reality to put your attention on. And the part that is worth your attention is the goodness that is already in your life today.

Happy Here Means Happy There

These two cannot coexist: “I am unhappy here, but I will be happy when I get there.” If you cannot find happiness here, you will not find it there. You will simply import your unhappiness into your new circumstances and wait again. The person who learns to be happy where they are is the person who carries happiness wherever they go.

So find it now. Connect to it with passion. Do not wait another moment. Your goal is to be happy here — because if you are happy here, you will be happy there. Wherever there turns out to be.
