Self-Searching and the Instincts: How to Identify What Is Driving Your Emotions

Self-searching is a means by which we can learn to explore ourselves, find out what is going on with us, and where our feelings, thoughts, and actions are coming from in our current life. It is not only needed when we are in trouble — it is a great daily routine to ask: How am I feeling today? What is going on with me? How has the theme of my thoughts been? What is it that is going on inside us that we can do some internal investigation on?

The Four Indicators of Emotional Insecurity

Self-searching is especially applied when we are in a state of emotional insecurity. Learning to recognize emotional insecurity means knowing its four main indicators: worry, anger, self-pity, and depression. When we are worrying excessively, we need to begin the process of neutralizing that state — to find out why we are worried and where worry has taken us before. Unchecked, it produces irritability, restlessness, and an inability to sleep.

It is hard to recognize anger as emotional insecurity, but that is, in fact, the best label for it. When we see angry people — tyrants who yell, intimidate, or say mean things — knowing that their behavior stems from emotional insecurity can keep us from becoming so intimidated. We do not have to react to it. And when we find ourselves in that same state, we can now recognize it as emotional insecurity that needs to be quieted.

Probing the Three Primary Instincts

The best way to quiet emotional swings is to probe the three primary instincts: security, sex, and society. In terms of worry, we can ask: How are my finances right now? How are my personal relationships? How do I feel about who I am in the world?

Emotional insecurity is triggered heavily by financial pressure. If we find ourselves there, the best way to neutralize it is to recognize that we have created a false dependency. Do we want to be dependent on materialism for our emotional security — or would we rather be dependent on something greater than ourselves? That something is our Creator, and the truth about our Creator.

The Two Kinds of Fear

Self-searching and looking at the instincts is so important because the instincts operate below the level of consciousness. Through this self-searching process we are able to bring these concerns up from the subconscious to the conscious — as opposed to letting them drive us from the dark.

When an instinct drives us, it produces concern or fear. And there are only two kinds of fear: the fear that we will not get what we want, and the fear that we will lose what we have. Neutralizing those fears is not that difficult, as long as we place our dependency on our Creator.

Demand vs. Request: The Hidden Pattern

When we are in fear, we act in defects because we have created a demand — a false dependency. When we are overly dependent on a relationship, on what people think of us, or on financial income for security, we have entered the realm of demand. Excessive worry, anger, self-pity, and sadness are its proof.

It is a tricky process to learn to recognize how we place demands on our Creator. When we stay in those emotional states, we are literally saying to the universe: Fix my problem or I will stay in bad behaviors and bad feelings. That position produces nothing more than more bad feelings and energy. When we enter into a state of request instead, it is simply a petition — and the world gives right back to us what we give.

Changing Yourself to Meet the World

Self-searching allows us to open the door to our subconscious — the door to our real drives in life — and invite our Creator in to rearrange any concerns or troubles we have. It reaffirms the truth: that our ultimate dependency is always on our Creator for everything. For where we should be and where we should not be. For what goes away and what is meant to stay.

It is a great principle to live by: stop trying to change the world, and learn that the real art of happiness is to change ourselves to meet the conditions of the world as they are. When we change the way we look at the world — the world changes right before our eyes.

Have fun with self-searching. Know that the true art of life is to know your own self. When the instincts are normalized the way our Creator would want them, they produce feelings of harmony, passion, and excitement. And when we have those feelings, our actions are based in humility and integrity — and we give rather than take.
