There is a tension at the center of the spiritual life: you are a unique individual with your own specific desires, history, and way of being in the world — and at the same time, you are inseparably connected to everything and everyone around you. The power of awareness is learning to hold both truths at once.

The Wave on the Ocean

Think of the ocean. It is one vast, unified body of water — and yet it produces endless individual waves, each one completely unlike any other. No two waves are identical. Each has its own shape, height, timing, and movement. Yet you would never say a wave is separate from the ocean. It arose from the ocean, it expresses the ocean, and it returns to the ocean. The wave is the ocean in individual form.

This is what human beings are. Each of us is a unique expression of the one creative source from which all life arises. Your desires are unlike anyone else’s. What love means to you, where you want to go, what fulfills you at a soul level — these are as individual as a fingerprint. No one can tell you exactly how to be happy or what your path should look like. That is yours to discover. And yet you are never separate from the whole. You are always connected to the source from which your particular wave arose.

Size Does Not Determine Purpose

A large wave is not more useful to the ocean than a small one. Both are expressions of the same source. Both serve the ocean’s purpose. The ocean recognizes no hierarchy of waves — only the endless, purposeful expression of each one. This is how God sees every human life. Some people accomplish visible things in large arenas. Others live quietly, consistently, doing small things with great love. Neither is more purposeful in creation’s eyes. What matters is that you are your wave — fully, honestly, without comparing yourself to the wave next to you.

Some of us are content in everyday life without spectacular recognition. Others are built for high-visibility expression. Both are valid. Both are purposeful. The tragedy is when someone spends their life trying to be the wrong kind of wave — larger than they need to be, or smaller than they were made to be — because they have not yet sat with the honest question of what kind of wave they actually are.

The Practice of Awareness

Walk through your day today and notice: what kind of wave am I right now? Am I building something that needs to start slowly and swell toward a crescendo? Am I in a moment of quiet rolling — not dramatic, but consistent and connected? Is there something I am trying to force that does not match the current energy of my life?

Stay connected to your source while recognizing your individuality. Do not separate from the oneness, and do not lose yourself in it. You are a unique expression of a universal love. Both things are fully true at the same time. That is the power of awareness.

Key Takeaways

  • Like waves on an ocean, you are a unique individual expression of a single universal source — individual, yet never separate.
  • Your desires are yours alone — no one can tell you how to be happy or what your specific path should look like.
  • A small wave serves the ocean as fully as a large one — purpose is not measured by size or visibility.
  • The tragedy is trying to be the wrong kind of wave: too large for your actual nature, or too small for your actual calling.
  • Check in daily: what kind of wave am I right now? Build from there, staying connected to the source that created you.
